Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest and most influential cocktails, dating back to the early 19th century. Its origins are linked to the original definition of a cocktail as a combination of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters. By the late 1800s, as bartenders began creating more elaborate drinks, customers would ask for cocktails made “the old-fashioned way,” giving the drink its name. Traditionally made with whiskey, sugar, bitters, and a touch of water, the Old Fashioned remains a classic symbol of simplicity and balance in cocktail culture.

Here’s how we did it:

Old Fashioned

Just over 7ml demerara rich syrup 2:1 ratio
3-4 dashes of Angostura Bitters
50ml Bourbon, Maker’s Mark
Orange peel twist
Cocktail cherry
Mixing glass

Add the syrup to a mixing glass.
To measure 7ml, slightly overfill a bar spoon as its commonly around 5ml. We’re using demerara syrup as it has a much deeper molasses flavour. Basics:Syrups
Drop in 3-4 dashes of Angostura Bitters.
Pour in 50ml of either bourbon or rye whiskey, we used Maker’s Mark Bourbon.
Add Ice and stir, until the glass is frosted.
Take care not to over dillute.
Strain into a rocks glass with preferably large ice cube.
Express an orange peel, then twist and garnish along with a cherry.
