Amaretto Sour

The Amaretto Sour is a classic cocktail that emerged in the United States during the 1970s, built around the sweet Italian almond-flavoured liqueur amaretto. It became particularly popular as a simple, approachable drink combining amaretto with fresh lemon juice, although early versions were often criticised for being overly sweet. The modern Amaretto Sour was elevated in the 2010s by bartenders who introduced bourbon and fresh citrus, creating a richer, more balanced cocktail while retaining its characteristic almond sweetness. Today, it remains a popular example of how a simple classic can be refined through modern cocktail techniques.

Here’s how we did it:

Amaretto Sour

50ml Amaretto Liqueur, Disaronno
25ml Fresh Lime Juice
10ml Simple Syrup 1:1
15ml Egg whites
2-3 Dashes of Angostura Bitters

Pour all ingredients into a shaker.
Dry shake first to combine the egg whites
Add ice and follow with a wet shake until the tin is frosted
Double strain into a rocks glass, ice optional.
Garnish with a cherry and slice of orange.
