The Vesper cocktail was created by author Ian Fleming and first appeared in his 1953 James Bond novel Casino Royale. Named after the fictional character Vesper Lynd, Bond orders the drink with gin, vodka, and Kina Lillet, famously specifying that it should be “shaken, not stirred.” The original recipe called for Gordon’s gin, vodka, and Kina Lillet, although modern versions often use Lillet Blanc or Cocchi Americano to recreate the bitterness and complexity of the original. The Vesper has since become one of the most iconic cocktails associated with James Bond and cocktail culture.
Kina Lillet was reformulated in the 80’s to make a slightly sweeter, less bitter replacement. Lillet Blanc.
Here’s how we did it:
Vesper Martini.
Three parts gin, one part vodka, half-part Lillet Blanc
75ml Gin, Gordon’s London Dry
25ml Vodka, Belvedere (sticking with the Daniel Craig theme)
15ml Lillet Blanc
long thin lemon twist to garnish.
Remember. Shaken, not stirred.
Pour your ingredients into a shaker filled with ice
Shake hard for 15-20 seconds until the shaker is completely frosted.
Double strain into a frosted martini glass, kept in the freezer or at least chilled with ice and soda.
The heavy ice will help dilute the drink.
Garnish with your thin lemon twist.
